Albert's Attic Gallery
Large
parts of the country were in fringe areas or beyond. Here in Yorkshire
the only source of television signals was Sutton Coldfield near
Birmingham. We were well outside the planned service area, but people
were buying television sets nevertheless and installing huge aerials.
There was considerable interest in ‘boosters’, which
were attributed with almost magical capabilities by some manufacturers.
Of course, as we all know you can’t amplify nothing, or to
use another cliché, garbage in, garbage out. Since signal
losses in cable are not so great at the relatively low frequencies
of Band I, the main purpose of these amplifiers was to provide stronger
input signals for insensitive receivers. They were also used to
feed small distribution systems, usually via a simple resistive
splitter.
